The Center for Transnational Legal Studies in London is a one-of-its-kind global partnership in legal education, encompassing students and faculty from 21 world-class law schools. It was initiated by Georgetown University Law Center, and the objective was to recognize globalization and respect differences in cultures in international laws. The center offers small size and multicultural orientations for students, and each semester they only accept 70-100 students.
About CTLS
The Center for Transnational Legal Studies (CTLS) is a joint venture between the University of Toronto and other premier law schools from countries around the world. It is a global education centre where students and faculty come together to examine and contribute to an understanding of the development of transnational legal norms, institutions, and processes.
The Center is located in the Swan House at 37-39 High Holborn Street at the head of Chancery Lane, in the heart of London’s legal quarter. A few minutes walk south on Chancery Lane, students and faculty will have privileges at the King’s College Law Library.
Two U of T faculty members will join other international faculty in teaching at the centre. Up to ten U of T J.D. students will study there, for one of the two semesters. Each class will have students from a diverse set of legal and national backgrounds. The Centre will encourage a team-based teaching approach between faculty from different schools and legal systems as well as courses and seminars which will bring together faculty and students in a collaborative inquiry.
The program will also include a core course focused on transnational legal theory, a weekly workshop featuring some of the world’s leading scholars and practitioners of international, transnational, and comparative law, and a participatory exercise to introduce students to each other and to the different perspectives that they bring to the Center.
Travel, Passports, and Visas
Participants must make their own international travel arrangements as well as those for any subsequent travel within Europe. Many airlines and travel agencies offer attractive round-trip airfares.
Passports are required for travel to London and are the responsibility of each student. Passport processing times can be very long. Plan ahead and get your passport early! Please note that you are not able to use an EU, EEA or Swiss national ID card to enter the UK.
Most students will require an electronic travel authorisation (ETA) to come to the UK for up to 6 months for short-term study at CTLS. You should check if you can apply for an ETA on the UK Visas and Immigration website.
If you are a national of a country that the UK Home Office defines as a visa national country, you may require a Standard Visitor visa to enter the UK for up to 6 months for short-term study at CTLS. You should check if you need a UK visa and consult the UK Visas and Immigration website for further information. Students in need of prior entry clearance are responsible for applying for their own visas.
Students must present their enrollment confirmation letter from CTLS (which will be uploaded to your Studio Abroad profile) and be able to provide proof of a round trip ticket to customs officials upon arrival in the UK. Some advice also suggests that students carry proof of financial support, such as a current bank statement as well as bank statements for the previous 2 months. For Georgetown Law students, we also suggest that you print off your bill from GU Experience indicating that your tuition, fees, and housing charges (if applicable) have been paid. Those of you receiving financial aid will most likely have your funds dispersed before the start of the program. Assuming that you have requested that the funds be transferred in to your bank account, your bank balance should reflect your financial aid award. In addition, if you travel during the program, you will want to keep your confirmation letter and your proof of a round trip ticket (and your passport, of course) with you at all times.
Please note that under UK immigration rules, CTLS students who come into the UK as visitors are not permitted to stay in the UK more than six months and are not eligible to work at paid or unpaid employment, including internships. This also applies to students who secure prior entry clearance.
