Intensive Course: Current Issues in International Law and Policy

This intensive course, taught by a Canadian diplomat and an American international lawyer, will explore the current challenges to the global international order through the lens of a series of real-life contemporary case studies. The co-instructors will unpack and assess a number of current crises in international relations from both a public policy and international law perspective.  Legal issues to be explored will include the public international law governing the use of force,  international human rights and humanitarian law, and international criminal law. Special attention shall be given to how values-driven powers like Canada, working through international institutions like the United Nations and nongovernmental actors based in the United States and Europe, can inject human rights, humanitarian, democratic, and rule of law content to proposed expedient transactional solutions.
