Intensive Course: Gender Equality in American Law

This course examines the evolving constitutional understanding of gender equality under the U.S. Constitution and relevant statutes. We will examine landmark cases, including Bradwell v. Illinois, Minor v. Happersett, Muller v. Oregon, Frontiero v. Richardson, Roe v. Wade, Craig v. Boren, Planned Parenthood v. Casey, United States v. Virginia, Nevada v. Hibbs, Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization, United States v. Skrmetti, as well as relevant executive orders and statutes, to understand the shifting conceptions of sex-based discrimination and gender equality. We will draw upon legal scholarship and doctrine to critically examine the role of various constitutional institutions in shaping and reshaping gender justice in modern America.
