Legal Line is a federal not-for-profit organization providing access to Canadian laws, referrals, and easy-to-understand legal answers written in plain language.

LSO - Law Society Referral Service

The Law Society of Ontario’s Law Society Referral Service offers a no-obligation referral service, connecting you with a lawyer or paralegal for a free 30-minute consultation to help you determine your rights and options. 

Legal Aid Ontario

Legal Aid Ontario provides legal assistance for low-income people in the province. In Toronto, call 416-979-1446, elsewhere in Ontario call: 1-800-668-8258.

Pro Bono Ontario

Pro Bono Ontario provides a Free Legal Advice Hotline for those who cannot afford a lawyer. You can receive 30 minutes of free legal advice from lawyer volunteers on civil law issues such as employment, housing, consumer protection (no family or criminal law matters). Call toll free at 1-855-255-7256 Monday to Friday from 9am to 5pm.

Community Legal Clinics

Downtown Legal Services (DLS)

Downtown Legal Services is a community legal clinic operated by the University of Toronto's Faculty of Law. Free, non-emergency legal services are provided by law students who are supervised by lawyers. To request legal assistance, you may call their intake line at 416-978-6447 during their intake hours or request an intake interview.

Barbra Schlifer Commemorative Clinic

Barbra Schlifer Commemorative Clinic offers free legal services and representation, trauma-informed counselling and multilingual interpretation to diverse women and gender-diverse people who have experienced violence and abuse. The clinic offers legal help in family, immigration, criminal and sexual assault law. To request assistance, please call 416-323-9149, Option 1 or email the clinic using their website form.

Aboriginal Legal Services

Aboriginal Legal Services’ Legal Clinic is a community legal aid clinic that provides free legal assistance to low-income Indigenous people living in the City of Toronto. The Legal Clinic serves people in a variety of areas including: Housing, ODSP/OW, Indian Act Matters, Canada Pension, Disability, Police Complaints, Criminal Injuries Compensation, Human Rights, Victim Rights Advocacy, and Inquests. The clinic provides Criminal and Child Protection legal services to Indigenous clients that are eligible for Legal Aid Services.
