Select Charter Cases
This resource brings together a curated collection of materials from select Supreme Court of Canada Charter cases. It primarily includes facta, which are not readily accessible elsewhere, including on the Supreme Court’s own website, alongside links to related scholarship authored by Jackman Faculty of Law members that provide additional analysis and context.
The collection is organized alphabetically by case name and can also be navigated by key Charter or Constitutional section to facilitate ease of use. While it reflects a carefully selected set of foundational and influential Charter decisions, it is not exhaustive. The Asper Centre continues to update the resource on an ongoing basis, and users may encounter gaps where materials have not yet been digitized or added.
The project began in 2002 with a small grant from the University of Toronto Courseware Fund. As part of the initial phase, faculty members identified 36 significant Charter cases for inclusion. The facta were subsequently scanned and organized by the Bora Laskin Law Library, which has maintained and updated the collection over time for use by University of Toronto Faculty of Law students and faculty.
The Asper Centre is pleased to make this collection publicly available for non-commercial use. By providing access to these materials, the Centre aims to support public understanding, education, and scholarly engagement with constitutional law in Canada.
Materials from Supreme Court cases commenced after February 1, 2009 are available on the Supreme Court of Canada website. Any inquiries in respect of the material contained in this collection should be sent by email to aspercentre@utoronto.ca.
