What We Do
DLS represents people charged with criminal offences at the 10 Armoury Street courthouse in Toronto. Our services are limited to people charged with summary conviction offences (e.g. assault, theft, fraud, threatening, failure to comply) who have been denied a Legal Aid Certificate because the Crown is not seeking jail. We will attend all court appearances for our clients, from initial appearances in set date court to the resolution of the charge(s), including guilty pleas and trials.
In partnerships with volunteer lawyers in the community, we also assist people who are appealing their summary conviction and/or sentence to the Superior Court of Justice at 361 University Avenue.
What We Don't Do
We cannot assist with driving offences or cases in which the Crown is seeking a jail sentence.
We cannot represent people charged with an "indictable," or serious, offence. Some offences can be either indictable (more serious) or summary (less serious), depending on how the Crown decides to proceed. Check the Charge Screening Form to see if the Crown is treating the offence as indictable.
