Cutting-Edge Executive-Style Graduate Education at Canada's Top Law School
The GPLLM at the University of Toronto Faculty of Law is an innovative and transformative program designed to help you realize your career potential through exposure to a robust legal education focused on the areas of law most salient to professionals and lawyers. The one-year immersive program, which attracts top talent from a range of backgrounds, is structured to help you balance your demanding commitments with intensive study and professional development. The program combines academic rigour and excellence, with an innovative curriculum.
Three concentrations designed for two distinct audiences.
The GPLLM program is designed to serve two distinct audiences: internationally trained lawyers who require a graduate level education in the Canadian common law to become eligible to be licensed to practice law in Canada and lawyers and non-legally trained professionals for whom legal fluency in the most pressing issues of the day is non-negotiable. Regardless of which pathway applies to you, our commitment remains the same: to deliver a transformative legal education that will fundamentally enhance how you think, lead, and create value.
You will learn from world-renowned professors, distinguished visiting faculty, lawyers from leading law firms, government offices and the judiciary who bring cutting-edge perspectives and research on the legal issues shaping today’s business landscape to the classroom. Your classmates, accomplished professionals and lawyers, will enrich every discussion with their diverse expertise and real-world insights.
Our dynamic classroom environment thrives on rigorous debate and collaborative engagement with legal timely issues, all anchored in rigorous and academic lens. Ours is an intellectually challenging environment where ideas are tested, perspectives are broadened, and students emerge having developed a rigorous understanding of the law.
This is our promise: exceptional faculty, extraordinary peers, innovative curriculum, and a transformative experience that will elevate every aspect of your professional capabilities.

Vincent Chiao, Associate Dean, Graduate ProgramsLaw is one of humanity’s most powerful social technologies. It structures how we live and work together, from enabling markets and institutions to stabilizing expectations amid rapid change. To study law is to study the rules and frameworks that make collective life possible - rules that guide cooperation, channel conflict, and help societies adapt to change.
Law is the language institutions speak. Regardless of the industry in which you work, legal education trains you to understand institutions deeply—how they make decisions, distribute risks, and shape behaviour. In an uncertain and rapidly changing world, this capacity to see clearly how rules structure action is what enables you not only to navigate existing systems but also to imagine and build better ones.
The GPLLM is more than professional training. It is an education in how to understand and influence the institutional structures that govern our lives.
