External Awards & Other Sources of Funding

External awards

L.LM. or S.J.D. applicants are expected to independently investigate and apply for all types of external funding for which their are eligible (e.g., SSHRC, OGS).

Applying for awards is a key part of scholarly activity. Honing this skill-set is especially important in academia. A successful grant track record can add valuable credentials to your resume.

The University of Toronto School of Graduate Studies lists a wide range of University-wide and external awards and other financial supports. Please note that each award has a different application deadline and process. We encourage all applicants to review the list of external awards as early as possible as most deadlines are set quite early, and before admission decisions are communicated.

The Government of Canada also features scholarships for international students,  we encourage all eligible international students to consider applying.

Loans and personal savings

Some students will fund their graduate legal studies through personal savings or private loans.

In Ontario, students may be eligible for the Ontario Student Assistance Program (OSAP). Review the financial assistance options that are available to you through your provincial or territorial government.

Employment

Students who are interested in working as a teaching assistant can find postings for these types of positions across the university on the CUPE 3902 union website. In addition, the U of T’s Career Learning Network allows students to search for off-campus, on-campus, volunteer, casual and work-study employers.

International students are encouraged to review the U of T’s Centre for International Experience’s webpage on on-/off-campus work.

University of Toronto Advanced Planning for Students (UTAPS) program

UTAPS is U of T’s largest need-based support program and covers the financial gap between a student’s actual education costs and the costs recognized by their provincial/territorial government student financial aid program.

The S.J.D. program is the only UTAPS eligible program at Jackman Law.
