Academic integrity is essential to the pursuit of learning and scholarship in a university, and to ensuring that a degree from the University of Toronto is a strong signal of each student’s individual academic achievement. Courses are governed by rules applicable to students at the University of Toronto and its Faculty of Law, including the University’s Code of Behaviour on Academic Matters (found here). Violations of these rules, especially with respect to academic integrity, are taken very seriously.
Please note that you are required to familiarize yourself with the policies by which you are bound as a student at this university, which includes seeking additional information on academic integrity from staff or Faculty or from other institutional resources (for example, the University of Toronto website on Academic Integrity), if you are unclear on what is required of you. To that end, we encourage you to review the following, among other, resources:
The University has also developed specific policy on the use of ChatGPT and other generative AI tools on marked assessments. The use of AI must be consistent with academic integrity.
In the context of graded written submissions at the Faculty of Law, absent express instructions permitting the use of generative AI tools on a specific assignment, using them constitutes the use of an unauthorized aid, which is an offence under the University’s Code of Behaviour on Academic Matters. For greater clarity, students may not copy or paraphrase from any generative artificial intelligence applications, including ChatGPT and other AI writing and coding assistants, for the purpose of completing assignments in courses, unless expressly permitted by the course instructor. Representing as one’s own an idea, or expression of an idea, something that was AI-generated may be considered an academic offense in courses.
All suspected cases of academic dishonesty will be investigated following procedures outlined in the Code of Behaviour on Academic Matters. Again, if you have questions or concerns about what constitutes appropriate academic behaviour or appropriate research and citation methods, please reach out to your course instruction, the library staff, or the Graduate program team.
Please note that unless otherwise specified, all assignments are to be completed individually.
