Financial Aid & Awards Policies

1. Register full-time in the program and maintain this registration throughout the academic year. If a student's status changes (for example, full-time to part-time, or you take a leave of absence), it may impact a ability for a student to receive funding.
2. Declare any significant changes to your proposed research topic (thesis only). A fellowship may have been awarded on the basis of the research topic set out in a student's application. Any significant change to the research topic must be approved by the Associate Dean, Graduate Studies.
3. Inform the Graduate Office of any immigration status change. If a student's visa status changes, a fellowship may be adjusted to reflect changes in tuition obligations.
4. Not be in violation of the policies of the University of Toronto, the School of Graduate Studies and Jackman Law, including the Code of Behaviour on Academic Matters and the Code of Student Conduct.

Funding received from Jackman Law will be allocated directly to the payment of student fees (tuition and incidental fees) in one instalment within the first few weeks of September.

Students must declare all awards/fellowships/scholarships for which they have applied and keep the Faculty informed of any awards that are secured. In the event that a student secures additional funding, the funding provided by the Faculty may be redistributed.

To receive Jackman Law's funding package, SJD students must meet the following conditions:

1. Students must be registered full-time in the program.
   Students must be registered for a full academic session (e.g., 17 weeks) to qualify for funding for that academic session. If a student takes an approved leave of absence or parental leave, the funding package will be reassessed to reflect the change in the student’s registration status
2. Remain in residence throughout the first year of the SJD program.
   Students must be resident in Toronto throughout their first year in the program, and must attend all classes, seminars, workshops and events that are required of SJD students. In addition, students are expected to meet regularly with their supervisor and committee members, and to actively participate in the intellectual and academic community at Jackman Law by, for example, attending events and activities at the law school that are not required.
3. Make satisfactory progress towards the completion of their degree.
   Graduate students are required to remain in “good standing” in the SJD program and to make “satisfactory progress” toward the completion of their degree requirements. SJD students must make satisfactory progress towards the completion of their degree by meeting all program-specific benchmarks and requirements.
4. Not be in violation of the policies of the University of Toronto, the School of Graduate Studies and Jackman Law, including the Code of Behaviour on Academic Matters and the Code of Student Conduct.

SJD students receive their stipend in three instalments via direct deposit or cheque. The first instalment is paid in September, the second in January, and the third in May. When applicable, the faculty will pay tuition directly in two installments, one in September and one in January.

SJD students are required to apply for and accept all external awards and fellowships for which they are eligible in each of years one (1), two (2), and three (3) of the SJD program and, if successful, accept any awards of which they are in receipt. Examples of these awards include SSHRC, Trudeau, OGS, and others.
When a student is successful in receiving an external award, the award will become a part of, or replace, the student’s stipend. Students who receive major awards are expected to request that their award activation commences in September.
