Alan Bogg

Professor Alan Bogg is an academic and barrister specialising in the general fields of labour and employment law. His academic work has been cited with approval in (amongst other courts) the United Kingdom Supreme Court, the Court of Appeal, the Supreme Court of Canada, and the European Court of Justice. As a barrister, he has been instructed in some landmark cases including the Supreme Court judgment in Secretary of State for Business and Trade v Mercer in 2024, which recognised the right to strike in UK law. As a scholar, his first monograph was awarded the Peter Birks Prize for Outstanding Legal Scholarship in 2010. He was awarded the Philip Leverhulme Prize for Outstanding Research in 2014. He was Professor of Labour Law at the University of Oxford until 2017, and he is now a Visiting Professor in Oxford and Emeritus Fellow, Hertford College, Oxford. He is currently Professor of Labour Law at the University of Bristol, a Barrister at Old Square Chambers, and Deputy Chair of the Central Arbitration Committee (the UK equivalent of the labour board). His two most recent books are Human Rights at Work (Hart 2024, co-authored with Collins, Davies and Mantouvalou) and Freedom of Association: From Labour Law to the Constitution (OUP 2026).
