Named Bursaries & Scholarships

To be awarded to a student in the Faculty of Law based on financial need. Preferences will be given to students with demonstrated interest and engagement in Mooting activities.

The Philip Anisman Award was established in the 2016-2017 academic year in support of student financial aid by alumni and friends of Philip Anisman, a graduate of the law school (LL.B. 1967) and UC Berkeley (LL.M., J.S.D.).  Philip is a renowned authority in Canadian securities law and was recently appointed a Commissioner of the Ontario Securities Commission.  A sole practitioner, he was previously a professor at York, Western and Monash Universities and Director of Corporate Research, Consumer and Corporate Affairs Canada.  Philip is the author of books, articles, and reports to governments on corporate, securities, constitutional and administrative law and has advised securities regulatory organizations in Canada and internationally.

The recipient of the Philip Anisman award will also receive a copy of Karl N. Llewellyn’s The Bramble Bush, donated by Philip as a complement to the generosity of his friends.

To be awarded to (a) full-time, undergraduate student(s) at the Faculty of Law on the basis of financial need. Preference will be given to students in the J.D. program with a demonstrated interest in constitutional rights.

The Joseph and Josephine Astaphan Bursary was created by Kris Astaphan, in honour of his parents, Joseph and Josephine.  It is awarded annually to two students demonstrating financial need.

A bequest from the estate of Katherine G. Baker '80, the annual income from the fund to be used under the direction of the Dean of the Faculty of Law to assist students in the school who are in financial need.

A gift of the partners of Blake, Cassels & Graydon LLP, matched by the university and the Province of Ontario, to be awarded annually to students in either the first or second year of the J.D. program on the basis of financial need and academic excellence. Additional factors may include recognizing diversity and the overcoming of barriers or multiple responsibilities and limited support. Other considerations may include involvement in the community and extracurricular activities at the university and with the law school and a demonstrated interest in areas of practice with which Blake, Cassels & Graydon is associated. Recipients who maintain a strong academic record and continue to demonstrate financial need will have the award renewed for the following year or years. 

A gift of the law firm of Borden Ladner Gervais LLP (Toronto), to be awarded annually to a student or students in the Faculty of Law on the basis of financial need.

A gift of the law firm Borden Ladner Gervais LLP (Vancouver), to be awarded annually to a student who either is a resident of British Columbia or has obtained an undergraduate degree in British Columbia, on the basis of financial need and public service.

A gift of the friends, family and colleagues of the late Andrew Brewin, of the value of the annual income from an endowed fund, to be awarded to a deserving student or students in the Faculty of Law on the basis of financial need.

Established by the Class of 2000, to be awarded to students in the J.D. program who take part in a human rights internship, on the basis of financial need.

A bequest from the estate of Helen C. Johnson of Chicago, Ill., being the income from an endowed fund established in honour of the memory of John Gladstone Campbell, a graduate of the University of Toronto, to be awarded to a deserving student or students in any year of the Faculty of Law on the basis of scholarship and financial need.

A gift of the family and friends of the late Kenneth Chomut '73, of the value of the annual income from the fund, to be awarded to a deserving student in the Faculty of Law on the basis of financial need.

Established in 1997 by the Class of 1957 on the occasion of the 40th anniversary of their graduation. Bursary to be awarded annually to a student or students on the basis of financial need.

Established in 1996 by the Class of 1961 on the occasion of the 35th anniversary of their graduation, in support of student financial aid.

Established in 1989 by the Class of 1964 on the occasion of the 25th anniversary of their graduation. The fund is to be used to assist students in the J.D. program on the basis of academic excellence and financial need. Special consideration is to be given to students with a physical disability.

Established in 1990 by the Class of 1965 on the occasion of the 25th anniversary of their graduation. The fund is to be used to provide financial assistance to students in the J.D. program.

The Class of 1975 created this award on the occasion of the 35th anniversary of their graduation from the law school. It is to be awarded to any JD student in any year of study on the basis financial need.

Established in 1996 by the Class of 1976 on the occasion of the 20th anniversary of their graduation, in support of student financial aid.

Established in 1996 by the Class of 1981 on the occasion of the 15th anniversary of their graduation, in support of student financial aid.

Established and supported through the contributions of the Class of 1982. The income from the fund to be used at the discretion of the Dean for one or more academic purposes to include but not be limited to: purchase of books and materials for the Library and provision of student bursaries. Each year the Dean shall report to the Faculty Council on the disposition of the income in the previous academic year.

Established through donations from members of the Class of 1984 and matched by contributions from Kris Astaphan on the occasion of the 25th anniversary of their graduation from the law school.  It is to be awarded to any JD student in any year of study on the basis of academic excellence and financial need

Established in 1996 by the Class of 1986 on the occasion of the 10th anniversary of their graduation, in support of student financial aid.

Established in memory of Alistair Wyatt '88, by the Class of 1988. The income from the fund is to be used to assist students in the J.D. program who are in financial need.

Established by the faculty and staff of the Faculty of Law upon the occasion of Dean Daniels' departure from the law school.  This bursary is awarded annually to a student demonstrating financial need.

A gift of the law firm of Davies Ward Phillips and Vineberg LLP, to be awarded annually to a student in the second year on the basis of scholarship and financial need.

To be awarded to (a) full-time, undergraduate student (s) at the Faculty of Law based on financial need. Preference will be given based on academic merit and to students interested in immigration law.

To be awarded to student(s) at the Faculty of Law who demonstrate financial need.

A gift of the partners, associates, clients and friends of the late Leslie G. Dollinger '70, a partner in the law firm of Fogler, Rubinoff, the income from the fund to be used to assist deserving students in the Faculty of Law on the basis of financial need and scholarship. Preference is to be given to students from northern Ontario.

To be awarded on the basis of financial need and academic excellence to students participating in pro bono work at a broad range of community organizations. Established by The Donner Canadian Foundation.

Established by a gift from the Class of 1968 on the occasion of the 20th anniversary of their graduation and in recognition of their great affection for Professor Bruce Dunlop, the income from the fund to be used to assist students in the school who are in financial need.

A gift of his family to honour Michael’s wish to serve society through law, the income from a capital sum to be awarded to a student in any year of the J.D. program on the basis of academic merit and financial need. (The scholarship may, in the committee’s discretion, be divided between two deserving applicants in the proportions the committee deems fit.)

A gift of the law firm Fasken Martineau DuMoulin LLP, to be awarded annually to a student in first year on the basis of scholarship and financial need.

Established in 2023 by Hicks Morley Hamilton Stewart Storie LLP in memory of Fredrick G. Hamilton. To be awarded to (a) full-time, undergraduate student(s) at the Faculty of Law on the basis of financial need. Preference will be given to 1L students, upon admission with an undergraduate degree that was focused on human relations, business, commerce, or industrial relations. Students entering 2L with demonstrated interest in labour law, through extra-curricular activities, club membership (The Labour & Employment Law Society), summer research fellowships, externships, and/or Moot competitions focused on labour and employment law may also be considered.

A gift of Mrs. H.G. Fox and the late Dr. H.G. Fox, to be used by the Faculty of Law for educational purposes. It is the wish of the directors of the fund that the monies be spent on bursaries and scholarships for deserving undergraduates. Awards are made at the discretion of the Faculty, generally on the basis of demonstrated need.

Established in memory of Mr. Ginou, this bursary is awarded annually to an upper year student who demonstrates financial need and a commitment to pro bono service.

Albert Gnat Memorial Scholarship was established in memory of Albert Gnat Q.C., a graduate of the law school's Class of 1965.  He trained with the legendary Bud Estey before becoming a partner at Lang Michener (now McMillan LLP) in 1974. Albert took great pride in the legal training he received at the University of Toronto's Faculty of Law, which helped him become a leader in his field. It is awarded annually to a JD student in any year of study on the basis of financial need and academic merit.

to be awarded to a student in the second or third year at the Faculty of Law on the basis of financial need, academic excellence and a demonstrated interest and/or proficiency in the area of labour law. Established by friends and admirers of the late Senator H. Carl Goldenberg.

A bequest from the estate of Samuel N. Goldhar, the annual income from a fund to be used to assist students in the Faculty of Law on the basis of financial need.

This bursary, awarded annually to an upper year student on the basis of financial need and subject area interest, honours the notable Toronto lawyer and founding partner of Goodman & Carr.  Preference is given to a student with a demonstrated interest in charities or not-for-profit law, or if there is no candidate with such an interest, to a student with a demonstrated interest in estate planning and trust law more generally.

Established by the DH Gordon Foundation in memory of David H. Gordon (Class of 1966).  David practiced business law at McCarthy Tétrault for 35 years, much of that time spent as a tireless mentor to young attorneys.  The award is to be awarded to a JD student in first year on the basis of academic excellence and financial need.  Preference will be given to students with a demonstrated interest in Business or Corporate Law and to students originally from Northern Ontario.

A gift from James Hopkins '96 to be awarded to an indigenous law student enrolled in the J.D. Program at the Faculty of Law on the basis of financial need.

Awarded annually to a student who has a demonstrated commitment to promoting diversity within the law school community. A first-generation Chinese-Canadian and the first in his family to complete a university degree, Victor Hum (’83) was passionate about promoting diversity and the rights of minorities in the eyes of the law. A gift of the Nelson Arthur Hyland Foundation, of the annual income from an endowed fund which will be awarded to a law student on the basis of scholastic ability and financial need.

Established by the Canadian Italian Advocates Organization, in honour of The Honourable Mr. Justice Frank Iacobucci. To be awarded to a student in any year who has demonstrated leadership and a commitment to community service, selected on the basis of academic excellence and financial need.

Established in 1991 by his friends and colleagues, on the occasion of the appointment of Justice Frank Iacobucci to the Supreme Court of Canada. The fund is to be used to provide financial assistance to students at the Faculty of Law.

To be awarded to students who have participated in an international internship program, on the basis of financial need and academic excellence.

Established by the Richard Ivey Foundation. Five bursaries to be awarded annually to second- or third-year students on the basis of financial need and a demonstrated interest or achievement in the area of environmental law. Another five bursaries will be awarded annually to students who demonstrate financial need and high academic performance generally.

To be awarded annually to a student in any year of the JD/MBA Programme at the Faculty of Law, on the basis of financial need and academic excellence.

The BBPA Harry Jerome Scholarship Fund was first established by the Black Business and Professional Association in 1988 to honour the memory of Harry Jerome, a world track record holder during the 1960’s and three time Olympian, holder of a graduate degree in sciences, vocal advocate for equality for Black Canadians and a Member of the Order of Canada. The new Fraser Milner Scholarship is available to a Black student who is a Canadian citizen or a permanent resident of Canada; aged 17 - 30 as of September 30; admitted to or enrolled in a Canadian law school for the academic year in which the scholarship is awarded. Selection will be based on high academic achievement; financial need; and recognized contribution to the Black community. Application forms available at www.bbpa.org . Preferences will be given first to students with a focus on municipal and planning law. If no such student exists, the award would then be open to a student taking courses focused on community building and the land development industry.

To be awarded to first- and second-year students at the Faculty of Law on the basis of financial need, academic excellence, and a demonstrated interest and proficiency in the advocacy area. Established in memory of Douglas K. Laidlaw.

A gift of the family and friends of the late William Latimer, Q.C., being the income from an endowment fund to be awarded to a student or students in any year of the Faculty of Law on the basis of scholarship and financial need.

To be awarded to (a) full-time, undergraduate student(s) at the Faculty of Law on the basis of financial need. In the event that two or more students present with equal financial need, preference will be given to a student(s) who plays sports at the Varsity or Intramural level at the University of Toronto.

The Law Society Foundation annually provides a sum of money contributed by the members of the Law Society of Upper Canada to assist law students in the Province of Ontario. A number of bursaries and loans are awarded at the discretion of the Faculty largely on the basis of demonstrated need.

An award of the Law Society of Ontario funded by Lexis Nexis Canada Inc., to encourage diversity and the attainment of equity in legal education and practice. The award is made to a student enrolled in either second or third year in the JD program and who is a member of a visible minority group, a member of the Indigenous community, a member of the LGBTQ community, or a student who has a physical, psychological, or learning disability. The award is based primarily on financial need with due consideration being given to academic achievement and/or devotion and commitment to community and/or university service, as determined by the dean of the Faculty of Law or his/her designate.

A gift of Imasco Ltd., matched by the university and the Province of Ontario, to be awarded annually to students in the J.D. program on the basis of financial need and academic excellence.

A gift of the family and friends of the late Arthur Minden, Q.C., being the annual income from an endowment fund to be awarded to a student in any year of the Faculty of Law on the basis of scholarship and financial need and to be retained by the student for the balance of the course provided he or she maintains satisfactory scholastic standing and continues to demonstrate financial need.

To be awarded to a JD student in the Faculty of Law with demonstrated financial need, with a preference given to a student who demonstrates leadership through mentorship and is active in their community.

To be awarded to (a) first year JD student(s) on the basis of academic excellence and financial need. Students selected will hold an undergraduate degree from Trinity College unless no such student is available in any given year. Whenever possible, the award should alternate between male and female student.

To be awarded to (a) full-time, undergraduate student(s) at the University of Toronto on the basis of financial need in the Faculty of Law. Preference will be given to students with demonstrated interest in Music.

Established in 1993 in memory of Pamela Murray '67, by the Class of 1967. The fund is to be used to provide financial assistance to students at the Faculty of Law.

Established in memory of Geofrey Myers, an alumnus of the law school and a partner at Lang Michener LLP (now McMillan LLP). Mr. Myers earned a Masters of Science degree and a Juris Doctor degree from the University of Toronto in 1974 and 1978, respectively. He was an accomplished corporate and securities attorney and became a partner at the firm in 1984.  He Chaired the Corporate Finance/Securities Law Group and the firm's Natural Resources & Mining Law Group. He was appointed Chairman of the Board in 2006, but passed away in 2008.  The Myers Scholarship was established in his memory by his family, friends and colleagues.  The scholarship goes to any JD student in any year of study on the basis of financial need and academic merit.

Established in 1988, the income and/or capital from the fund to be used at the discretion of the Dean for the benefit of native law students at the Faculty of Law.

A gift of the law firm of Minden, Gross, Grafstein & Greenstein, in honour of the late A. George Ness '49 to be available to both graduate and undergraduate students in the Faculty of Law at no interest, repayable on conditions to be determined upon the granting of the loan.

Established in honour of the memory of Bernard “Bookie” Newman (a student in the second-year of the Faculty of Law at the time of his death in 1951) by a number of his friends, and designed to recognize those characteristics which he exhibited in his lifetime, being the annual income of the subscribed fund, awarded to the student who, having completed the work of the second year, in the opinion of the Faculty, best merits the award, having regard to the objects of the donors and on consideration of: (a) scholarship; (b) high moral character; (c) financial need; (d) suitability for the practice of law; (e) interest in extracurricular and community activities; (f) consciousness of community responsibilities.

A gift of friends and family of Lee Paikin '77, of the value of the annual income from the Lee Paikin Fund, to be awarded annually to a law student on the basis of scholastic ability and financial need.

Established in honour of Jack Petch’s service as Chair of the University of Toronto’s Governing Council. Jack is a graduate of the law school, receiving his JD in 1963 as well as being the Gold Medallist that year.  Donations were contributed from members of Governing Council, University Vice-Presidents, Principals and Deans, as well as friends and family of Jack Petch. It is to be awarded to any JD student in any year of study on the basis financial need.

A gift of the family of the late Richard W.J. Posluns '62, of the annual income from a fund to be awarded to a deserving student or students in the Faculty of Law on the basis of financial need and scholarship.

A gift of the law firm of Goodman and Carr, in honour of their partner, the late Richard W.J. Posluns '62, of the annual income from a fund to be awarded to a deserving student or students in the Faculty of Law on the basis of financial need.

An endowed fund established by Baker & McKenzie on the occasion of Skip's retirement from the firm.  The bursary is awarded annually to a student on the basis of financial need and scholarship.

To be awarded to (a) full-time, undergraduate student(s) at the University of Toronto on the basis of financial need in the Faculty of Law. Preferences will be given to a student with demonstrated interest in history of law.

Created by the friends and family of Irwin Singer, this bursary is awarded annually to a student with a demonstrated interest in Securities Law, or if there is no candidate with such an interest, to a student with a demonstrated interest in corporate and commercial law more generally.

To be awarded to (a) full-time, undergraduate student(s) at the Faculty of Law on the basis of financial need. Preference will be given to students from a family income of under $70,000.

A gift of the family of the late Fanny Solway, being the annual income from an endowment fund to be awarded to a student admitted to the first year of the J.D. course who (a) has obtained standing in pre-law studies satisfactory to the council and who satisfies the Council of capacity to be an outstanding law student; and (b) demonstrates financial need.

An endowed fund established by Gallant Y.T. Ho, to be awarded annually to a second- or third-year student on the basis of financial need and significant improvement reflecting perseverance and determination as determined by the Faculty.

A gift of the partners of Baker & McKenzie to celebrate the 40th Anniversary of their Toronto office and to honour their colleague, Hubert J. Stitt, to be awarded annually to a J.D. student on the basis of scholarship and financial need.

A gift donated by friends, classmates and family of the late Nathan J. Stitt '64, of the value of the annual income from the fund, to be awarded to a married student on the basis of scholarship and financial need.

Established in memory of David Stockwood, an alumnus of the law school (JD 1966). A great mentor to colleagues and competing counsel, David was a talented barrister as well as a sought after mediator and arbitrator. He was the founder of The Private Court, one of the earliest alternative dispute resolution groups in Ontario, and in 2005 was awarded the Law Society Medal.  The award was established through gifts from his family, friends, colleagues and associated law firms.   The award benefits JD students in the second or third year who have demonstrated an interest in and aptitude for advocacy through their participation in advocacy work in one of the University's legal clinics.

Established in their memory by their son, Martin Teplitsky, Q.C., to be awarded annually in the amount of $2,500 to one or more students in the J.D. program on the basis of financial need.

To be awarded by the Faculty of Law on the basis of financial need to students enrolled in any year of the combined JD/MBA program. Preference will be given to students with demonstrated leadership through prior community and/or school engagement activities. Consideration will be given to those students from underrepresented groups.

To be awarded to (a) full-time, undergraduate student(s) at the Faculty of Law on the basis of financial need.

To be awarded to (a) student(s) based on financial need. Preference will be given to students with a demonstrated interest in contracts law and/or legal history.

To be awarded to (a) full-time, undergraduate student(s) at the Faculty of Law on the basis of financial need.

A bursary to be awarded annually on the basis of financial need and academic excellence. Established by John (Jack) Whiteside '67.

Established in memory of Caron Wishart, who passed away in December 2010.  She was a graduate of the Class of 1978 and was Vice-President of Claims at LawPRO from 1995 until 2010. Donations were contributed from LawPRO as well as Ms. Wishart’s family, friends and colleagues. It is to be awarded to a JD student entering second year studies  on the basis of academic merit and financial need.

Established in memory of Tony Chi Wah Wong, a graduate of the law school (Class of 1985), a former Liberal MPP for Markham, and a regional councillor for York Region. He was a founding director of the Metropolitan Toronto Southeast Asian Legal Clinic. Donations were received from Tony’s friends, classmates, colleagues and family.  It is to be awarded to one or more second or third year JD students who demonstrate financial need, with preference for students participating in the Faculty’s legal clinics and/or who work to create bridges between communities inside and outside the law school.

Established by the partners of Torkin Manes LLP in 2004, the award goes to a second or third year student engaged in full-time studies at the Faculty of Law who has demonstrated financial need, high academic achievement and involvement in community or university service.

A bursary to be awarded annually to a student in any year at the Faculty of Law on the basis of financial need and scholarship. Special consideration to be given to a deserving student with a disability, provided that if there is no such student enrolled at the Faculty of Law in a given year, the award may still be granted.

To be awarded to (a) full-time, undergraduate student(s) at the Faculty of Law on the basis of financial need.

A gift donated by the family and friends of the late Ronald Si Chen Yu '75, of the value of the annual income from the fund, to be awarded to a student in any year of J.D. program on the basis of scholarship, financial need, and interest and involvement in community activities.

Awarded to students in any J.D. program or post-graduate degree program on the basis of academic achievement, residency, community involvement and financial need. The deadline for applications is usually mid-August. To be awarded to a student or students on the basis of financial need and a demonstrated interest in intellectual property, electronic commerce, telecommunications, biotechnology, or other areas of innovation law and policy.
