Our work
Guided by equity and possibility, LAWS exposes program participants to legal thinking and the justice system through workshops, mentorship and employment programs. LAWS’ programming increases legal knowledge, encourages academic engagement and promotes diversity and inclusion in the legal profession. In partnership with Osgoode Hall Law School and the Lincoln Alexander School of Law, LAWS works with over 1,500 high school students annually and relies on the support of over 300 justice sector volunteers, including law students.
Our impact
LAWS has a track record of enhancing access to legal education for students from communities historically underrepresented in both law school and the legal profession. The vast majority of LAWS students feel that LAWS has a significant impact on their academic engagement, personal and professional relationships, and outlook for the future.
30% LAWS students miss 30% fewer days per year. 12% LAWS students’ average marks are 12% higher than other students in parallel courses. 47% LAWS graduates enrol in university 47% more frequently than other students at their school.
."Volunteering for LAWS has been a very rewarding experience! I have developed lasting mentoring relationships with students, helped them navigate their academic experience and guided them through career choices. LAWS has been a valuable opportunity to learn from students' life experiences and give back to our community in a real and direct way."
Student opportunities
Volunteering for LAWS is a great way for law students to enhance their own classroom learning, develop important professional skills, and make a positive and lasting contribution to the community. Time commitments vary and can be flexible.
