Investor Protection Program

The Investor Protection Program at the University of Toronto Faculty of Law provides free legal support and public legal education to individuals from vulnerable communities—such as seniors, newcomers, youth, and low-income Canadians—who are at risk of or have experienced investment-related harm. Our mission is to promote fairness, financial literacy, and access to justice in the investment landscape.

Our work

We provide free legal support and public education to support vulnerable individuals who have experienced or are at risk of investment-related harm. We deliver tailored education sessions, engage in community outreach, and collaborate with regulators to strengthen investor protections—while offering law students valuable, hands-on experience in financial services law and policy.

Our impact

The Investor Protection Program partners with regulators, advocacy groups, and academic institutions to advance investor rights and financial inclusion. Through student-led research, public legal education, and community outreach, we’ve delivered seminars and presentations to over 150 participants, published 10+ reports and briefs, and built lasting partnerships to support vulnerable investors. Our work helps shape a fairer financial system while providing students with meaningful, real-world legal experience.

Student opportunities

The Investor Protection Program offers meaningful roles for law students to build expertise in investor protection, financial literacy, and public interest advocacy. Students gain practical experience through job placements, educational outreach, and policy-oriented research in collaboration with community partners and regulators.
