Inbound Exchange Students

You must apply through U of T’s CIE. Visit the website for the current year’s application deadline, as late applications are not considered. 

We have two terms at the law school.
 
The Fall term begins early in September and ends in December. 

The Winter term begins in January and ends in April. 

You may come for either or both terms 

Depending on your home school's policy and availability, you may apply for one or both terms. 

Sessional dates for the upcoming academic year are posted in January of each year. Please note you must remain at U of T during the relevant examination period.

All applicants are reviewed and decisions are made by our Admissions Committee before being accepted into the program on inbound exchange.
 
Regular admission to our school  is competitive and rigorous and the Admissions Committee seeks exchange applicants who have a successful and enjoyable experience. Therefore, it is recommended that you have strong English skills, both written and oral, as no accommodation is given for English as a second language.

Once approved, you will receive a confirmation letter from us. You will also receive information about registering for courses. 

The CIE will also provide you with information regarding your visit, such as housing, health care and arriving in Toronto. 

As an incoming exchange student, you will enrol for courses online at the same time as all JD students. You will use your UTORid and password (received after admission) to enrol for courses with our Course Match.

Please note the limitations on Letter of Permission and incoming exchange students:

• Enrolment is not permitted in Directed Research, Intensive Courses, Moots, Clinics, or Externships
• Some classes are not open to Incoming Exchange students. Please see the JD Handbook of Academic Policies for further details. 
• Exchange students must fulfill the credit requirements of their home institution. 
  • However, exchange students may not take more than 16 credits per term, and a maximum of 32 credits for the year. 
  • Exceptions are permitted only with permission from the Assistant Dean, Academic or your home institution. 
  • We do not accept half-time exchange students.
