Explore transnational legal theory in a global classroom
The Center for Transnational Legal Studies (CTLS) is a joint venture between the University of Toronto and other premier law schools from around the world.
It serves as a global education center where students and faculty collaborate to understand the development of transnational legal norms, institutions and processes.
U of T at CTLS
Two faculty members from U of T will join other international faculty in teaching at the center. Up to ten JD students will study at CTLS for one or two semesters.
The CTLS experience
Each class includes students from diverse legal and national backgrounds. The Center encourages a team-based teaching approach between faculty from different schools and legal systems, as well as courses and seminars that bring together faculty and students in collaborative inquiry.
The program includes a core course focused on transnational legal theory, a weekly workshop featuring leading scholars and practitioners of international, transnational, and comparative law, and a participatory exercise to introduce students to each other and the different perspectives they bring to the Center.
The founding institutions of the CTLS are:
- Georgetown University Law Center
- Free University of Berlin
- Fribourg University Law School
- Hebrew University of Jerusalem
- King's College London
- University of Melbourne
- National University of Singapore
- University of Sao Paolo
