Financial Aid for JD Students

Expanding access to legal education is one of our highest priorities. We offer bursaries based on financial need, with the largest awards going to students with the greatest demonstrated need.

Who can apply?

If you are a Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or protected person, you are eligible to apply for financial support while pursuing your JD or combined JD degree at the University of Toronto.

Eligibility Note: JD students are not eligible for the University of Toronto Advanced Planning for Students (UTAPS) program. But don't worry -  our dedicated JD Financial Aid Program provides an alternative source of support.

About the JD Financial Aid Program

Our program aims to bridge the gap between your available resources and the cost of attending law school. Support is provided primarily through bursaries, with additional assistance available in the form of interest reimbursements on authorized Professional Lines of Credit.

The program is governed by policies set by the Financial Aid Committee, which includes staff, faculty, and student representatives. This committee ensures that the system remains fair and equitable, distributing aid based on demonstrated financial need.

The funding is structured to provide the greatest support to students with the highest need.

  • If your demonstrated financial need is $8,000 or less, you are expected to cover it through provincial loans, authorized Professional Lines of Credit, or other personal resources.
  • If your demonstrated need exceeds $8,000, you may be eligible for bursary support. Each year, we distribute over $5 million in financial aid to our JD students.
