International Exchange Program

The final deadline for applications is December 3, 2025.

Late applications will not be accepted.

You do not need to provide transcripts or reference letters with your initial application, though some schools may request references after you’ve been matched.  

• Apply online through U of T’s Centre for International Experience

You will need to submit:

• A Statement of Interest answering why you want to go on exchange, what you expect to gain, and how it fits into your academic and professional goals;  
• Your top five ranked institutions (these are NOT your official selections, but will give us an idea of popular destinatons);  
• A résumé;
• Combined Program Student Approval Form, if applicable.

After reviewing applications, the Manager, Student Programs will schedule a brief meeting to discuss your rankings. These meetings will occur in January 2026.

Your academic record will be checked at the time of application and a minimum of a P average will be needed in order to go on exchange. 
 

If approved, you will receive an email in January or February with your placement, and you must confirm your acceptance via email.

The host institution will then review your nomination.

While our nominations are rarely rejected, it is possible. In such cases, you will work with the Manager, Student Programs, to find another school, though a second nomination may not always be possible.  

Do not make travel arrangements before being accepted by the host institution. 

• You must take the equivalent of 14 U of T Faculty of Law credits, chosen from courses offered by the host institution.  
• You cannot take a course that you have already completed unless the material is significantly different.  
• Language courses do not count toward your 14-credit equivalent but may be taken for extra credit.  
• All courses must be in-person; online courses are not accepted for transfer credit.  
• Get course approval from the Records Office by emailing records.law@utoronto.ca and CC sako.khederlarian@utoronto.ca once you’ve selected your courses at the host university.  

You will pay U of T tuition and incidental fees, which must be paid before the term starts.

Please be aware that some host institutions require exchange students to purchase health insurance.  

You can apply for financial aid and bursaries through U of T’s Centre for International Experience (online application). Exchange bursaries do not impact your application to our financial aid program. 

You are responsible for arranging your own accommodations. Consult the host institution’s website for more information. 

After completing your exchange, we will receive a transcript from the host institution.

You will receive 3.5 transfer credits (equivalent to 14 U of T Law credits), along with a notation indicating your exchange participation and the host school’s name.  

Course titles and grades from the host university do not appear on your U of T transcript, so you may need to obtain an official transcript from the host university for job applications. 

You are responsible for arranging your travel to and from the host country. 
Do not make travel arrangements before being accepted by the host institution.  
 

If you decide to withdraw from the exchange, submit a letter of withdrawal immediately.

Communicate your intention as soon as possible to avoid holding a spot another student could use. 

If you return from a first-term exchange, register in-person with the Records Office by 4:00 p.m. on the first day of your class. 

Consider pursuing an internship during your exchange term or in the host city during the summer break if you're away in the second term.
