Leadership Skills

“The Leadership Skills program has been one of the most valuable elements of my U of T Law experience. The program is practical and has immediate applicability – I have successfully used techniques and strategies that I learned in these sessions during the Toronto and New York recruits, in student leadership roles, while networking, and at work. When prospective or lower-year students ask me for advice on navigating law school, I always emphasize the importance of attending the sessions; in a crowded legal market, soft skills help us stand out.”

Ready to write: professional writing workshops with Stephanie Mitchell (2024)

Student Testimonial: "I found the workshop very helpful, especially the framework prior to writing, as well as the email writing tips. I would recommend it to other students.”

“I found the workshop to be both interactive and informative. While we covered some of the tips during our 1L Legal Research and Writing course, it is still a valuable refresher on how to conduct legal writing and maintain effective professional email communication. I am grateful for having the opportunity to attend the workshop.”

Leadership coaching with Catherine Chang (2024)

Student Testimonial: "My coaching session with Catherine was extremely helpful! She was supportive and encouraging and gave me tons of advice on how I could work on developing certain professional traits. I would recommend her to any student with doubts as to how well they would fare in the legal profession! Catherine was great at listening, allowing me to think of different ways to approach any inquiries I raised. I particularly appreciated that she gave steps and assignments to pursue later to utilize the tips she suggested in the meeting. I found having something to do afterward helped to really crystallize her advice."

Individual public speaking coaching with Chris Graham (2025)

Student Testimonial: "The public speaking was tremendously helpful - I went in with two questions for Chris: what makes great stories great and how we can use humour when telling stories. He provided a really useful story framework from Marshall Ganz called Challenge-Choices-Outcome and talked about how to apply it in everyday life. It’s a fantastic tool that has already helped me to tell better stories. On the humour front, he also had some excellent and insight ideas."

Student Testimonial: "I had my session with Chris Graham today. It was brilliant! 10/10 experience. Chris has an amazing presence. He was really great at creating a calm and comfortable space and all his advice was really insightful, practical and useful. I left feeling a lot more confident about my abilities and super excited to implement his feedback.”

Beyond the books: professionalism skills for legal success with Gina Alexandris (2025)

Student Testimonial: "I enjoyed the session with Gina and a big thank you to the CDO for organizing it! What I enjoyed most: the movie scenes and thinking through real-life legal scenarios in which our emotions affect the waywe present ourselves in the workplace. What could be improved: I think more activities would have been great. I know that we were short on time, but I was disappointed that we didn't get to do the active listening activity. I think it would've been more engaging/effective to have more activities like the "writing with opposite hand" activity instead of spending most of the time listening to a lecture.”

Legal pathways: four-part program with Icon Leadership Institute

In 2025-26, we piloted a new partnership with ICON Leadership Institute. A cohort of 22 students attended a program that involved a series of assessments and coaching sessions to help students build their personal narratives, understand their legal interests, and network more effectively. Students put their narratives and networking skills to the test at a law firm reception and at our Faculty’s annual Career Fair in March.

Student Testimonial: “I really appreciated how personalized and practical the sessions were. The networking event at Fasken was my highlight, since I was able to practice and refine my elevator pitch. As an introvert, I also enjoyed that I was able to ask lawyers questions in a 1-on-1/small group format...Thank you for this amazing experience!”
