Externship Seminar

JD Course Code: LAW520H1F

Description

Note: This seminar will meet six times, twice early in the term, twice mid-term, and twice towards the end of the term. The meetings will be on Wednesdays, from 8:30 until 10:20 am. During the Fall 2025 term we will meet on September 17, September 24, October 1, October 8, November 12, and November 19.

The goal of externships is to provide students with hands-on experience in various areas of law. The goal of this companion seminar is to develop externship students' reflection on the practice of law, the specific area of law in which they work, and legal institutions. The seminar will provide an opportunity for students to integrate their practical, doctrinal and theoretical learning. Sessions will focus around substantive issues, skills building, professional responsibility and legal ethics, and include discussions of the issues raised by the students' casework. Students enrolled in year-long externships must participate in the fall seminar.

Evaluation

In order to receive credit, students must attend and participate in the seminar sessions and will be required to submit four 1000-word guided reflections during the term.
