Note: Attendance at intensive courses is mandatory for the duration of the course.  

This course examines the Supreme Court’s evolving interpretation of racial equality under the Fourteenth Amendment.  We will examine landmark cases, including Dred Scott v. Sanford, Plessy v. Ferguson, Brown v. Board of Education, Loving v. Virginia, Parents Involved v. Seattle School District, Shelby County v. Holder, and Students for Fair Admissions v. Harvard, to understand how the Court has shaped and reshaped our conceptions of equality.   We will draw upon legal scholarship and doctrine to critically examine the Court’s role in shaping and reshaping racial justice in a multiracial America.

Evaluation

Students will be evaluated based on a final paper of 2500 to 3000 words. Papers must be delivered to the Records Office by 4:00 p.m. on February 2, 2026.
