Selection Criteria
Eligibility to Nominate
Any current member of the Henry N.R. Jackman Faculty of Law at the University of Toronto community including students, staff, and faculty can nominate a student for a Dean’s Leadership Award. Students may not nominate themselves.
Eligibility to Receive the Award
Only currently registered students are eligible.
- The award recognizes 1L and 2L students for their contributions during their 1L and/or 2L year.
- 3L students are not eligible for this award but may be considered for the university-wide University of Toronto Leadership Award.
- Example: Students entering their 3L year in September 2026 are eligible for the 2L award for contributions made during their 2L year. Students entering their 2L year are eligible for the 1L award for contributions made during their 1L year.
Nomination Considerations
Ideally, a nominee’s contributions will include a combination of the following:
- Leadership on Jackman Law committees, clubs, organizations, journals, and/or student government.
- Leadership related to equity and diversity at the law school or in the legal community.
- Encouraging peers to participate in co-curricular and extracurricular activities, with a primary focus on strengthening the U of T Law community.
- Contributions that enhance the sense of belonging and community at U of T Law.
- Additional Notes
- Students may receive the Dean’s Leadership Award only once.
- Nominations cannot be based solely on contributions made for academic credit (e.g., clinic, moot, etc.).
- There is no financial component to the award. Recipients will receive a certificate, be invited to attend a lunch with the Dean, and be recognized through an announcement to the law school community and a story on the law school website.
Nominations will open in May 2026.
