Indigenous Mentorship Program

Thinking about law school? The Indigenous Mentorship Program pairs Indigenous undergraduate students interested in pursuing law with current Indigenous JD students at Jackman Law.

Through the Indigenous Initiatives Office (IIO), Jackman Law is committed to supporting Indigenous student recruitment, retention, and success, while strengthening Indigenous voices within the legal profession. This program is one of the many ways we help create pathways into law school and beyond.

Mentees and mentors are matched based on shared interests, experiences, and goals, making it easier to build a meaningful connection. The program is designed to be flexible.

This is an opportunity for Indigenous undergraduates to ask questions, seek guidance, and learn directly from someone who has navigated the law school journey. While our mentors are based at the St. George campus, the program is open to Indigenous students across Canada.

The transition from law school to practice can feel daunting, but you don’t have to navigate it alone. The Indigenous Mentorship Program also connects current Indigenous JD students at Jackman Law with practicing Indigenous lawyers and alumni.

Through the Indigenous Initiatives Office (IIO), the Faculty of Law supports Indigenous students not only during their studies, but also as they prepare to enter the profession. By pairing JD students with Indigenous alumni, the program helps bridge the gap between academic life and professional practice.

Mentorship relationships are built around shared experiences, interests, and career goals. Students gain insight into what life after law school can look like, whether that’s articling, pursuing clerkships, working in firms, public service, or community-based advocacy. Alumni mentors provide guidance, share lived experiences, and offer encouragement rooted in both professional expertise and cultural understanding.

Meetings are flexible and tailored to each match. Conversations might focus on preparing for interviews, building networks, managing wellness, or exploring career paths. Mentorship can happen virtually, by phone, or in person, depending on what works best for the mentor and mentee..
