Legal History

Legal history enriches our understanding of the law, by exploring the evolution of law over time.

Our leading legal scholars examine how legal ideas and legal institutions have changed over time, and the social, political and cultural contexts of that change.

Studying history provides valuable insights into contemporary legal issues, and reminds us of the ever changing nature of law and justice.

Courses

Legal history is an integral part of our curriculum, with historical analyses found across subject areas and courses. As a student here, you can study legal history in both specialized and general courses.

You may also enrol in the Legal Theory Workshop and attend the Osgoode Society for Legal History’s informal workshops where renowned legal scholars and historians of law present their works in progress.
