Intensive Course: Freedom of Expression: Global Issues

Freedom of expression is a widely agreed upon principle of constitutional law in free democratic societies. But, at the same time, it is at the centre of fierce and wide-ranging disputes. The first part of the course will examine the rationales for protection of freedom of speech, pervasive doctrinal themes and legal forms.  The second part of the course will delve into key controversies about freedom of expression including hate speech, broadcast regulation, regulation of online platforms, academic freedom, and freedom of speech in universities.
