Information (JD/MI)

1. In the first year of the program students complete all first year courses in place at the Faculty of Law.
2. In the second year of the program students complete 4.0 full course equivalents (FCE's) in the MI program, and enrol in either the General Program Pathway or one or more concentration areas. 
3. In the third and fourth years of the program, students, with the approval of the Director of the Combined Program, must complete a combination of courses totaling at least:
   • 45 credits in the Faculty of Law, including all upper year requirements.  Starting in 2023, students will need 46 upper year credits in Law.
   • 4.0 FCE's in the Faculty of Information.
4. Students may not take any courses for credit outside the Faculties of Law and Information.
5. Students must obtain at least a Pass standing upon completion of the first year in law and at least a B+ standing upon completion of the first year in Information to be eligible to continue in the program.

Note:
Notwithstanding the Faculty of Information's course selection process, students must meet the Faculty of Law course selection deadline.

Students must submit their proposed course selections for years three and four of the program to the Director of the Combined JD/MI program prior to the applicable course selection deadlines in each year in each Faculty.  Any changes must also be approved by the Director.

Tuition for the Combined Program will be as follows: In the first and second years of the Combined Programs, students shall pay the applicable tuition in force at either Law or Information, as the case may be. In the third and fourth years of the Combined Program when students are taking a combination of courses from both Law and Information, students shall pay the applicable tuition in force at Law for each of the third and fourth years.

Grading for students in the Combined Program will be the applicable grading scheme in force at the time for each of Law and Information (for example, students in the Combined Program taking Law courses will be graded according to the grading scheme at Law and students in the Combined Program taking Information courses will be graded according to the grading scheme at Information).

Students enrolled in joint programs MUST complete the requirements of both programs in order to graduate in a joint program. No diplomas will be awarded until all the requirements for a joint program are fulfilled.

Students applying to the JD/MI program must be admitted to both the Faculty of Law and U of T’s Faculty of Information. As such, candidates must satisfy the admission requirements of both faculties independently, and all applicants must complete the Law School Admission Test (LSAT) and all admission requirements of the Faculty of Information Studies. A separate application to each Faculty must also be submitted.

Students who are in the first-year of either the JD or the Master of Information program may apply for admission to the combined JD/MI program by meeting the normal application and admission requirements for the other faculty and notifying their faculty registrar.
