Justin Basinger Memorial Award

Justin was proud of his Métis heritage and dedicated thousands of hours to volunteer work that served Indigenous people in Toronto and beyond. In his first year of law school, he joined the Indigenous Law Journal (ILJ) and served as its Co-Editor in Chief for two years. The purpose of this award is twofold: to increase awareness of, and scholarship on, Indigenous topics, perspectives and laws among JD and graduate students at Jackman Law, and to ensure that Justin’s love for the community is never forgotten.

Justin Basinger

Background to the Award

In May 2020, Justin Basinger (JD 2012) passed away suddenly at the age of 33. As a student at Jackman Law, Justin was deeply involved in the school community. He was a member of the Aboriginal Law Students’ Association (ALSA), now ILSA, served as Co-Editor-in-Chief of the Indigenous Law Journal (ILJ), and participated in numerous initiatives focused on Indigenous justice. After graduating, he articled with and later worked as a solicitor for the City of Toronto. He also continued his community work by volunteering as Vice-President of the Board of Aboriginal Legal Services.

To honour Justin’s memory, his family and friends established a memorial award at Jackman Law. The endowed fund provides an annual prize to a Jackman Law student who submits the best paper on an Indigenous topic.
